Signs of Spring in the Surrey Hills

Signs of Spring
Bluebells now in flower in the Surrey Hills

After the hottest day of the year so far, temperatures registered 21c on the weather station at Woodhill Cottage today, it may seem obvious to most that Spring has arrived. It is the speed at which it has descended that is interesting. Following the longest and coldest winter for thirty years, it seems as though mother nature has done six weeks work in the just three. Even as recent as the first week in April daytime temperatures were struggling to get into double figures and there was little evidence of any spring-like activity. On the 8th April our swallows arrived and last weekend we heard a cuckoo for the first time , this week its the garden that has sprung into life.

The Cherry blossom is out and the Bluebells are starting to flower in the garden and in the woodland and coppices around Shamley Green, Blackheath, Farley Heath and the Hurtwood.

The Azaleas are in flower, Lilies are poking their shoots through the soil and there are buds on the Grape Vines around the house.

This weekend we will be planting up the vegetable patch and I’ll be letting you know what is going in over the bank holiday. Keep your veggies covered with fleece over the bank holiday weekend as a weather system is forecasted to bring in colder weather. [Click here for more pics]
