Chilworth Friary Fete

It was summer fete day today at the Franciscan Friary in Chilworth deep in the Surrey Hills. The weather was warm and sunny as fete goers enjoyed this very traditional event. There is however a disappointing dark cloud hanging over the fete, in that it could be the last.

Friars first took up residence at Chilworth in 1890. Located in a quiet remote location on the edge of Blackheath Village, the Friary was built to be the noviciate for the order. Every friar spends his first year of Franciscan life as a novice to make a break with his previous way of life.

According to the friary news letter, the last few years has seen the numbers of friars decline in the United Kingdom. In early 2010 the decision was taken to withdraw from Chilworth. At this time it is unclear what will happen to the friary but there is hope that another religious community will occupy it, either way the friars will be a big loss to the community. There is no firm date for withdrawal as of yet and it is expected that the friars will be there until the end of 2010.

The fete today was a cheerful and bucolic event in this stunning setting and those who enjoyed it today will be hoping that it will not be the last.
